Two Days of Workshops Focus on the Value of Peers in Behavioral Health

Key staff: Lucero Robles, LCSW, Senior Director, Quality Assurance

CalMHSA hosted two separate full-day workshops last month focused on uplifting Peers in the county workforce.

On March 20, nearly 60 county staff from 21 different counties convened for a workshop highlighting the many ways peers enhance behavioral health delivery. Sessions included the powerful story of one peer who works for Nevada County; the context and history of the peer movement; a panel discussion with counties that have successfully integrated peers; using data for better client outcomes; understanding the peer support Medi-Cal benefit; and a robust discussion about one county’s strategies for successful peer employment.

“In California, for peers, the moment is here, and the value proposition is so high – clinically, ethically, financially – for us to continue this work,” said CalMHSA Executive Director Amie Miller.

On March 19, more than 100 peers from across California participated in a day of learning, inspiration and sharing. Sessions focused on best practices for working with counties, offered practical strategies for connecting with clients and included time for networking and learning from others.

Of those who responded to a post-event survey, 90 percent either agreed or strongly agreed that the information presented was useful, pointing to presentations on the history of peer support, learning advocacy, and active listening and establishing boundaries as especially impactful.
