State Hospital Beds
CalMHSA supports counties in working with the Department of State Hospitals (DSH) on availability and cost stabilization of hospital beds for patients mandated to involuntary treatment under the Lanterman Petris Short (LPS) Act.
State hospitals serve individuals who require daily oversight and treatment and who have severe behavioral health conditions. CalMHSA collaborates with DSH and county behavioral health departments to:
- Develop discharge procedures for timely discharge from state hospitals
- Reduce the number of patients placed annually in state hospitals and maintain the reduction
- Identify placements alternative to the state hospital for LPS patients
